Many students believe that getting a good job depends only on marks, but in today’s IT industry, companies look far beyond academic scores. While marks show consistency and discipline, they do not fully reflect a student’s skills, creativity, or problem-solving ability. Recruiters understand this very well, which is why they focus on practical knowledge, communication, personality, and the ability to learn new things quickly. This is good news for students because even if your marks are average, you can still build a strong and successful IT career.

One of the biggest things companies check is practical skills. They want to know if you can understand real-world problems and work on actual projects. Your ability to write clean code, build websites, design databases, or work with tools like Git, VS Code, or Figma matters more than your percentage. This is why students with side projects, internships, freelancing experience, or GitHub portfolios often get selected faster than students with only high marks. Practical skills show that you can perform well in real work situations.

Companies also pay close attention to problem-solving ability. IT jobs require logical thinking and the ability to break down problems into smaller steps. This is tested through coding rounds, aptitude tests, and simple problem-solving interviews. Even if you are not perfect in coding, showing a clear thought process, confidence, and a willingness to try makes a strong impact. Recruiters appreciate students who think calmly and come up with solutions instead of getting nervous.

Another important area is communication and attitude. You don’t need perfect English, but you must be able to explain your thoughts clearly. A positive attitude, teamwork, honesty, and the eagerness to learn are qualities companies value deeply. In HR rounds, recruiters observe how you speak, how confident you are, and how professionally you behave. Many students with strong technical skills fail interviews because of hesitation or lack of preparation in communication. Good soft skills make you stand out.

Finally, companies look for passion and willingness to grow. They prefer freshers who show interest in learning new technologies, exploring tools, participating in hackathons, or doing certifications. Students who take initiative and show curiosity are more likely to succeed. Recruiters believe that knowledge can be taught, but attitude and passion come from within. So if you show that you are motivated, hardworking, and ready to learn, you will always have a strong advantage—even if your marks are not the highest.
